We believe the timing for the announcement of our new business promoting Walking and Biking is perfect! We see more people parking their cars in the driveways especially when it comes to a quick trip to the local store to pick up milk and bread. With escalating gas prices people are now getting out their bikes for that trip or better yet walking there! Every now and then we see stories in the news about people who are now commuting to work on their bikes. To their amazement they find that it is more enjoyable and less stressful and helps their waistlines!
In many ways here in the USA we are way behind our friends in Europe and Australia as reported in a paper entitled Walking, Cycling, and Obesity Rates in Europe, North America, and Australia written for the Journal of Physical Activity and Health. Here is what they reported: “Countries with the highest levels of active transportation generally had the lowest obesity rates. Europeans walked more than United States residents (382 versus 140 km per person per year) and bicycled more (188 versus 40 km per person per year) in 2000.” Could this correlate with a 60% rate of obesity across all ages in the USA as recently reported?
As we reach crisis levels with this obesity report it is time to take action to reverse this trend especially among our children! It is time to get them to leave their “couch potato” existence playing video games and glued to computers and get them out on bikes and walking!
We plan to create exciting fun WalkNBike biathlons across the country. Through our association with a travel agency we will be offering WalkNBike tours of the USA and around the world. Also we will be offering WalkNBike related products/services along with resources of other organizations promoting walking and biking.
